The structure is masonry and the exterior wall is limestone. The building stands on the site of the Bennet House Hotel which operated in Georgetown since 1863. The present building known to Georgetown residents as "The Old Bank" was erected in 1918 by The Merchant's Bank of Canada which later became the Bank of Montreal. The bank occupied the building until it was forced to close in 1943 under war regulations. The property was used by the Town Council as municipal offices. It was purchased by the Royal Bank in 1947 and housed the Georgetown branch until 1973 when the bank relocated across the street.
